To Run Or Not

It’s raining outside. A moment ago it was torrential. Now it seems to have slacked off a bit. I have a rain jacket I bought a few years ago that is perfect for this type of weather. It’s just a matter of my getting motivated. I’m busy with breakfast at the moment, but after about a half hour I will start really working on that motivation.

Running

Yes, I know. It’s been a while since I exercised. Winter does that. Or, more appropriately, I let winter be an excuse not to run or exercise. Anyway, today I went out and ran. 42.31 minutes per my Fitbit. 32 minutes of that in the peak heart rate zone. 8 minutes in the cardio area. And 26 minutes in the field above cardio but not in peak. My highest heart rate was towards the end of the run. I hit 176, two beats above max. It was but for a moment.

I forgot to change the setting on MapMyRun from Treadmill to run, so it didn’t track my distance. But at this point, just getting over 40 minutes is more important than my speed or distance.

After Run Post

Or more appropriately – after shower/after run post. I’m feeling clean and refreshed. I was afraid my run would tire me out. So, that’s good. Anyway, I’m getting ready to finish the last 3rd of the 3rd chapter of my textbook.

The decision is do I do it here or do I go to a coffee shop. Sometimes studying from home is problematic. Mostly because I am easily distracted by chores. Today, though, chores were a nice break between various study activities. Still, I sometimes just need to get out of the house.

Sigh.

Decisions, decisions.

Yup

This shirt states exactly how I feel during and after I run. And even this morning.

I Ran

Yes, I did run. Farther and longer than I planned. And I’m hurting. Nothing serious. Just old age. My Achille’s tendons, ankles, and lower calf muscles are aching. However, its just a dull ache, not the intense pain of a few months ago. I figure my legs are just taking their sweet time in getting conditioned.

On a side note, I am getting frustrated with the various exercise apps. I would love to be able to post all my runs directly to my blog, but none of them allow for that functionality. If one of them did, I’d pay money for the premium account. Well, we all can’t have what we want, can we?

Running!

Okay people, I’m going running. Try not to wreck the place while I’m gone.

Update: So, my plan had been to run 45 minutes. However, my legs were screaming at me most of the way. As a result, I decided to cut is short. Yet, I still managed 3 miles. In 36 minutes. Not bad.I had a hunch my heart rate was not quite as high as the previous two runs, and I was right. Oh, it still got high, and the average was a bit higher than the other two, but I had some extended periods of lower heart rates than the previous two runs.

I had a hunch, though, that  my heart rate was not quite as high as the previous two runs, and I was right. The average was a bit higher than the other two, but I had some extended periods of lower heart rates than the previous two runs. And I didn’t hit a top heart rate over 170. Close, 169. But, I’d say my hunch was correct.

Running

Yup, hit the trail. Pushed myself despite the cold. And I managed a minute faster average mile than on Wednesday. But, I took a Musinex to deal with the dry cough this run produced. Oh, I also ran an extra 15 minutes compared to Wednesday. I’m happy to be getting back into the swing of things. I missed running.

Guess I’m Still Sick

So, yesterday, after work, I thought it would be a good idea to go for a run. I was feeling better after over a week of aches, pains, and the threat of a migraine.

Yeah, guess I was wrong about feeling better.

This morning? Ears are ringing loudly again. My jaw and throat are sore. And every tendon used in running is threatening to separate from me.

For the record, being sick on top of getting old really, really sucks.

Back Slapping The Road

After a three week hiatus I decided to go for a run this morning. It was beautiful outside. A slight breeze, blue skies, and a perfect temperature to make it a wonderful run. It’s not that I haven’t been exercising, it’s that I’ve not been running. I’ve biked a few times, and even taken quite a few walks and hikes. But today I ran.

The problem is my achilles tendons have been acting up. Walking and bicycling do not aggravate them as much as running. So, with that in mind, as soon as I finished stretching after my run, I grabbed the corn bag from the freezer and iced them pesky tendons. It worked. Now they don’t feel aggravated at all.

Now, if I could just ice the people in my life who aggravate me.

The Three Things From My Father

As I sit in front of my computer this morning after having completed a 3 mile run I am reminded of the three things given to my from my father.

The first thing is the reason for my running – my belly. I’ve been genetically blessed with my father’s side of the family’s gut. With the exception of Uncle Wendall, all my uncles have a gut. Most of my cousins too. Those that don’t, well let’s just say we’ve disowned them, the show offs.

The second thing is what’s happening right now as I type – I’m dripping sweat all down my body. It’s clinging to my eyebrows, running down my back in rivulets, and swamping on my sternum. I remember seeing my father sweat in the hot summer sun as he would work the fields, his t-shirt so soaking wet it clung to him like a second skin. I had that same problem this morning. It took a hell of a fight to get my t-shirt off.

The third thing? Probably the only thing I received from my father that is not impacting me because of my morning run – my hair. I still have a full head of hair. Though the hair strands themselves are thin, I’m not actually experiencing a thinning of my hair. Oh, and those of my father’s side of the family that have no belly but do have thinning hair? We’ve let them back into the family.

Anyway, that’s what I was reminded of this morning.
